does any1 know what to spray on earthen mugs (w/o glaze) to make it possible to transfer image by sublimation?
Sublimation image transfer is possible to glazed mugs and tiles, and polyster fabrics by using appropriate heat press machines. I want to help my townmates to improve the competitiveness of their earthen mugs by adding designs on the mugs by a method other than the usual way of hand painting. People in Tshirt sublimation printing industry are saying that sublimation inks stick to polyester only. I wonder if it is possible to use polymer spray to make the earthen mugs sublimatable–I mean, being able to transfer image to the mugs using sublimation method.
Sublimation Ink jet Transfers
For hard substrates that can’t take traditional ink jet transfers – such as license plate holders, mugs and tiles – you’ll need an ink jet printer outfitted with sublimation inks. (CLC/Ps can also be used to make sublimation transfers for hard goods.)
Inks. While standard inks are simply transferred from the paper to the substrate, sublimation inks go through a chemical reaction when subjected to pressure and heat. Known as sublimation, this chemical reaction forces the ink particles to go directly from a solid state to a gas state. The gases bond with the substrate and become part of it instead of simply being transferred onto it.
Output device. Currently, Epsom printers are the only desktop ink jet printers that accept sublimation inks. Though decorators can switch back and forth between standard and sublimation inks in the same printer, doing so isn’t practical because the printer will need to be flushed before cartridges are changed. If you’re planning to add sublimation to your business, consider designating the Epsom for this process alone.
Transfer paper. The paper used in the sublimation process is a clay-coated media that allows for a high release of the sublimation dyes.
Cost. Paper for sublimation can cost between 12 cents and 45 cents per page, depending on page size. The printed cost for an image, using sublimation, is about $1 to $1.30, depending on the print platform used, according to data from Kurt DeYoung, product marketing manager for Sawgrass Technologies.
Applications. Ink jet sublimation works on anything with a polyester coating. This can be a deterrent if you’re used to 100% cotton garments. However, several manufacturers, including Hanes and Condé Systems, have developed polyester/cotton blend garments especially for sublimation.
Ink jet sublimation also yields sharp images on those items that won’t take traditional ink jet transfers. But when printing mugs or other rounded objects, make sure you use specialty heat tape, which holds the image in place while the substrate is in the heat press. This tape is specifically made for this process and won’t leave marks where it was adhered.
Also, make sure the Teflon sheets that come with your heat press are in good condition. These sheets ensure even heating on ceramic items, which are poor conductors of heat.
While the process of transferring images with standard and sublimation ink jet transfers is basically the same, there are major differences in the chemistry going on behind the scenes. Understanding these differences can help you choose which method will work best in your business.
