can I just use a serger for when a pattern calls for a zig zag stitch?
all the diaper patterns I’ve been reading call for a zig zag stitch. Then the same patterns go on to say you can serge the edges if you want to. Yeah..i want to. Also I want to serge where it says to zog zag. I only have an industrial lockstitch machine and an industrial serger (hey…im a guy…gotta be industrial). So I’ve got a month to learn how to sew. Do I have to go out and get a zig zag stitch machine? Or can I just use my serger? Thanks! 
Maybe. Depends on if the zig zagging is the center of your fabric or not. If on the cut edge of the fabric, depending on what kind of industrial serger you have, (if 4 or 5 thread and two looper) it might even be better and work better than a lock stitch machine kind of zig zag or not. With a home serger you can often actually pick from several kinds of serger stitches, and choose to use one or two needles or one or several loopers, and if you wanted to sew in the center of your fabric, you could always fold the fabric and flat lock it in the center instead of using a lockstitch kind of zig zag sometimes. I don’t think that is going to be that easy though, with a thick padded diaper and industrial serger instead, if in the middle of the diaper fabric, just because they are not made to be as as versatile, (more a one task kind of machine most times instead) and usually only set up for one kind of stitch and maybe only one kind of threading and threading path- as each one would just be made for more a specialized task. But you could read your manual, and see if you have several threading choices on it, or several needle/looper choices. And see if that would lend it’s self to what you would want to do with it.
