Can I use vintage thread for my sewing machine?
I am brand spankin’ new to sewing. I took my first sewing lesson on a new Brother sewing machine last week. I picked up a few new spools of thread today at the store, however I noticed on both Ebay and Etsy there are many large lots of vintage thread up for sale – super cheap. Is there any reason why I couldn’t or shouldn’t use vintage thread? I’m not doing any “heavy duty” sewing. . .I’m just learning. Going to hem a pair of pants, shorten some curtains, that type of thing.
The old thread you can not trust it’s reliability in your machine. It could break easily or fray. You are far better off getting new thread.
I restore antique linens and those threads are fine for hand sewing and quilting but not on your machine.
