Help with rewiring a sewing machine foot control?
I have an old sewing machine that has a controller foot. It looks like a table or chair leg crushed part of foot control power cord. It’s the cord between the foot control and the machine — not the plug end. I think I should be able to cut out the damaged part of cord, and rewire the ends together, but I don’t know exactly how to do that. Can someone tell me what supplies I need to do this safely?
The plug that goes into the machine is connected to both the foot control and the wall plug– I looked for a replacement , but the plug configuration is hard to match. I’m better off fixing the existing cord if i can’t find a new plug.
If you can remove the whole cord and replace it, that’s best but if you can’t or it looks like you have to get too far into the machine to do it, you can cut out the damaged part of the wire and join the parts back together quite safely. It’s fussy but not difficult. A pair of wire strippers would come in very handy, but a sharp utility knife will work if you’re careful. Use a marker or nail polish or anything that will write on the wires to colour code the wires so you know which is which and can connect the same ones together later. Cut the damaged part out. Separate the two wires in the cord, both ends, by cutting carefully exactly down the middle of the cord about 3 inches. Then you want to strip the coating, an inch or so should do it, off the wire ends you now have, carefully so you don’t cut into the copper wires inside. That’s where the wire strippers are very useful. Then twist the wires together, each side separate, making sure you connect the right ones according to your colour coding. You can use wire nuts, also called marrettes, for this but it isn’t necessary. Once you have the wires together, take some electrical tape and cover all exposed parts of both wires with it, wrapping tightly several times. This is necessary so the two wires you took the insulation off of will never connect. Electrical tape takes the place of the coating you stripped off. More is better, but don’t go crazy. Once you are sure you have the twisted ends properly covered, tape them together neatly with the electrical tape, going past where you separated the two wires and their coating, to keep the repaired part stable. Plug it in. If the machine runs and there’s no sparks or smoke, you did it right.
